How to Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer with Essential Oils

Homemade Hand Sanitizer Recipe

Why should you learn how to make your own hand sanitizer?

Germs are a part of life - they are everywhere. No matter how careful you are, you can not escape them. Stopping the spread of germs requires killing them before they can spread to someone else. There is absolutely no substitute for washing your hands with soap and water. But we can't always do that. Many people think that hand sanitizer is the answer to "germ warfare". However, purchasing name-brand sanitizers can be costly and most of them contain alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers have shown to produce bacteria which are resistant to the alcohol and chemicals they contain. It also kills all the good bacteria on your skin. This makes you more susceptible to disease in the long run.

An answer to this problem is to make your own alcohol-free hand sanitizers with essential oils. The essential oils will kill both bacteria and viruses and actually boost your immune system while leaving your body's natural balance of good bacteria alone.

For a thicker, gel like product (similar to store-bought, only so much better!):

Simply add 10-15 drops essential oil (Deliverance or Sunburst, blends by Butterfly Express, are my favorites!) per 2 oz. of pure Aloe Vera Gel. Refrigerate when not in use to increase shelf life!

*note*  I wouldn't try to make more than 2-4 oz of this up at a time, so the essential oils remain fresh and potent. The  3 things that destroy essential oils are light, heat and air. If mixed with aloe vera, or anything really, and stored for long periods of time, the oils will slowly break down and lose their potency over time. As a rule, you never want to mix essential oils with something and store them that way...Make enough to use within a few weeks or a month, and you'll be sure to have fresh, fully therapeutic oils each and every time!

For a thinner solution that can be sprayed on:

In a 4 ounce glass spray bottle (preferably a tinted, glass bottle to protect the oils from light and air, which will degrade essential oils over time):

*Fill the bottle 2/3rds of the way full with distilled water

*Add 1T of aloe vera gel or Miracle II neutralizer gel (sold by Butterfly Express)

*Add essential oils. You could add about 30 drops Deliverance (a Butterfly Express blend) oil OR 10 drops each lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and clove. I LOVE the citrus fragrance of the Sunburst blend.

*Fill the bottle with distilled water to the top

          *Shake well

*Spray 3 - 5 sprays onto the hands to sanitize. Massage into the hands 2-3 minutes for until absorbed.

I like to use the spray-on version as well as the gel, because the spray-on sanitizer is great for spraying grimy handles in the store, doorknobs that may not be all that fresh, shopping cart handles, etc!
